Sacramento County Airport System
The Sacramento County Airport System is a network of public-use airports operated by Sacramento County, serving millions of passengers and general aviation users throughout the Sacramento Valley and Northern California region. The system is anchored by Sacramento International Airport (SMF) and supported by three general aviation reliever airports: Executive Airport (SAC), Mather Airport (MHR), and Franklin Field (F72).
Sacramento International Airport (SMF)
Sacramento International Airport is the flagship facility of the Sacramento County Airport System and one of the busiest commercial airports in California. Located approximately 12 miles northwest of downtown Sacramento off Interstate 5, SMF serves as a primary gateway for the greater Sacramento metropolitan area, which encompasses over 2.5 million residents across Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, and Placer counties.
SMF operates two terminal buildings — Terminal A and Terminal B — connected by an underground passageway with a moving walkway system. The airport handles over 12 million passengers annually and is served by more than a dozen major airlines, including Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Southwest, offering nonstop service to more than 30 domestic destinations and select international routes. Terminal B, which opened in 2011, earned LEED Gold certification and is recognized as one of the most energy-efficient airport terminals in the United States.
The airport's IATA code is SMF and its ICAO code is KSMF. It sits at an elevation of 27 feet above sea level and features two parallel runways: Runway 16L/34R (8,600 feet) and Runway 16R/34L (8,500 feet), accommodating wide-body aircraft including the Boeing 787 and Airbus A330.
Sacramento Executive Airport (SAC)
Located just 4 miles south of downtown Sacramento, Sacramento Executive Airport (KSAC) is the county's primary general aviation facility and the second-busiest airport in the system by operations. Executive Airport serves corporate aviation, flight training, charter operations, and government agencies. With runways 02/20 (6,010 feet) and 12/30 (3,837 feet), the airport accommodates a wide range of piston, turboprop, and light jet aircraft. The airport is home to numerous fixed-base operators (FBOs) and aviation businesses, making it a hub for Northern California's business aviation community.
Mather Airport (MHR)
Mather Airport (KMHR), located approximately 12 miles east of downtown Sacramento in Rancho Cordova, is a former U.S. Air Force Base converted to civilian use after the base's closure in 1993. Today, Mather serves as a cargo and general aviation airport with one of the longest runways in Northern California — Runway 22L/04R at 11,301 feet — making it capable of handling wide-body freighter aircraft. The airport is home to cargo operators and is used extensively for firefighting aircraft operations coordinated by CAL FIRE during wildfire season.
Franklin Field (F72)
Franklin Field is a small general aviation airport located in the southern Sacramento Valley, primarily serving recreational pilots and agricultural aviation. It features a single runway and supports local flying clubs and agricultural spray operations in the surrounding farmland.
Together, these four facilities form a comprehensive aviation network managed by the Sacramento County Department of Airports, headquartered in Sacramento, California. The system coordinates air traffic relief across the region, reducing congestion at SMF by directing general aviation operations to reliever airports. For travelers connecting through the Sacramento region, nearby alternatives include Livermore Municipal Airport, Oakland International Airport, and general aviation fields throughout the Central Valley.
